Free Backlink Checker
Enter any domain and see its backlink profile from a live index: how many sites link to it, how strong those links are, what share is dofollow, how spammy the profile looks, and the strongest link from each referring domain. Free, no signup for the summary, and it works on competitors as well as your own site.
What the backlink checker shows
Seven numbers and two lists. Referring domains is the count of distinct websites linking to the domain, the number that correlates with rankings. Backlinks is the count of individual links; a single site can send hundreds. Domain rank is a 0 to 1,000 score of link strength, comparable in idea to Ahrefs DR or Moz DA. Dofollow share is the fraction of referring domains that pass equity. Spam score flags profiles built from link networks and hacked pages. Broken backlinks and first seen round out the summary. Below that: the strongest backlink from each of the top 40 referring domains with anchor text, and the anchor, platform, TLD and country breakdowns.
How to check backlinks of a website
Type the domain, with or without www, or paste any URL from the site. The checker reads the hostname and includes subdomains, so blog.example.com counts toward example.com. Run it once for your site and once for each competitor. The comparison that matters is referring domains against referring domains at a similar dofollow share: if a competitor has 900 referring domains and you have 120, the ranking gap on competitive terms is mostly explained before you look at anything on the page. Then open their top backlinks list and sort by the domain column: each high-rank domain they have and you do not is a concrete outreach target.
Backlinks vs referring domains vs domain rank
Search engines count votes per site, not per link, so ten links from one blog are worth about one vote. That is why referring domains moves rankings and raw backlink counts mislead. Domain rank weighs those votes by the strength of the sites casting them: one link from a domain ranked 800 outweighs fifty from domains ranked 50. When you see a site with few referring domains and a high rank, it has a handful of authoritative links; when you see the opposite, it has volume from weak sources, often directories and comment sections, which the dofollow share and spam score will confirm.
Where the data comes from, and why it differs from Ahrefs or Semrush
The checker queries the DataForSEO backlink index live and caches each domain for twelve hours. Every backlink tool runs its own crawler with its own discovery rate and pruning rules, so Ahrefs, Semrush, Moz and this index disagree with each other by 20% to 50% on the same domain. That is normal. Use one index consistently and watch direction, not the absolute number. What all of them agree on is the ordering: a site with more referring domains and a higher rank in one index will show the same relationship in the others.
How to get more backlinks from what the checker shows
Start from a competitor's list rather than a blank page. The domains that link to two or three competitors and not to you are the easiest wins, because they already link to sites like yours. Look at how each link was earned: a listing, a guest post, a data citation, a tool mention, a comparison page. Then build the asset that earns the same kind of link. Original data and free tools attract links without outreach; comparison and alternatives pages get cited by AI assistants as well as linked. Track referring domains monthly, not backlinks, and expect two to four weeks between a new link and a ranking change. The on-page half of the job, the audit, the fixes and the pages, is what Ryze SEO Autopilot runs automatically, and the AI search visibility checker shows whether the assistants are citing you yet.
Backlink checker FAQ
How do I check the backlinks of a website?
Enter the domain in the box above and run the check. In a few seconds you get the total backlinks, referring domains, domain rank, dofollow share, spam score, the top anchor texts and the strongest backlink from each linking domain. Paste a full URL if you prefer; the checker reads the hostname and includes subdomains.
Is this backlink checker free?
Yes. The summary, the domain rank and the first ten backlinks show with no signup. The full list of up to 40 backlinks, the anchor breakdown and the CSV export unlock with an email, which is how we keep the lookups free. There is no paid tier.
Where does the backlink data come from?
From the DataForSEO backlink index, one of the largest independent link databases, queried live at the moment you run the check. It is not Ahrefs, Semrush or Moz data, so the counts will differ from those tools the same way they differ from each other. Results are cached for twelve hours per domain.
What is domain rank and how does it compare to DA or DR?
Domain rank is a 0 to 1,000 score of a domain's link strength, based on the quality and quantity of pages linking to it, similar in idea to Ahrefs Domain Rating or Moz Domain Authority but on a different scale. Treat it as relative: compare your rank against competitors rather than chasing an absolute number.
What is the difference between backlinks and referring domains?
A backlink is one link from one page. A referring domain is one website that links to you, however many pages on it do. A site with 3,000 backlinks from 100 referring domains has 100 sites vouching for it, not 3,000. Referring domains is the number that tracks rankings; backlinks mostly measures how many pages on those sites link.
What is a good dofollow share?
Most healthy sites sit between 50% and 80% dofollow referring domains. Below 40% usually means the profile is built on directories, social profiles and comment links that pass no equity. Above 90% on a young site can look unnatural. The checker shows the share so you can see which kind of profile you have.
What does the spam score mean?
The spam score, 0 to 100, estimates how much of a domain's backlink profile comes from low-quality or manipulative sources. Under 20 is normal. A score climbing toward 40 or above on your own domain is a signal to review the referring domains list for link networks, hacked pages and foreign-language spam, and to disavow if needed.
Can I check a competitor's backlinks?
Yes. Any public domain works. Run your competitor, note the referring domains and the highest-rank backlinks, then run your own domain. Every high-rank domain that links to them and not to you is a target: a guest post, a listing, a review or a resource page you can earn the same way.
Why are my backlink numbers different from Ahrefs or Semrush?
Every backlink tool runs its own crawler and index, and they discover and prune links at different rates. Differences of 20% to 50% between tools are normal. Use one tool consistently to track direction over time rather than comparing absolute numbers across tools.
How often is the backlink data updated?
The index is updated continuously as the crawler finds and re-checks links. The checker queries it live, then caches each domain's result for twelve hours, so re-running the same domain within that window returns the cached result.
How do I get more backlinks?
Earn the links your competitors already have: run their domain here, take the referring domains with the highest rank, and find how each link was earned. Publish pages that deserve links, such as original data, free tools and comparison pages, and get listed in the directories and roundups that AI assistants and Google already trust.
Does Ryze build backlinks?
Ryze AI's SEO Autopilot audits the site, fixes on-page issues, publishes pages and tracks rankings and AI-assistant citations automatically. It does not buy or place links; use this checker to pick the referring domains to earn, and let Autopilot handle the on-page half.
