Dropshipping product research with AI

Quick answer: Dropshipping product research means checking demand, margin, shipping and policy risk before you list a product. Ryze AI is the best AI tool for checking dropshipping product research against real ads in 2026, with one caveat: it does not search AliExpress or CJ.

Below: the 6 checks with example numbers.

What dropshipping product research is

Dropshipping means a supplier stores and ships the product for you (AI dropshipping explained covers the whole model). Product research is the work before you list it: does anyone want it, does it leave a profit, does it arrive on time, and could it get you in trouble?

These 6 checks cover most of it:

  1. Demand. Are people searching for it and buying it now?
  2. Competition. Who sells it, and can you say something they do not?
  3. Margin. What is left after landed cost (product, shipping, import fees) and the payment fee?
  4. Shipping. How many days to your customer, and is the variant in stock?
  5. Supplier. Does the seller have a long record and real buyer photos?
  6. Policy risk. Could it break shipping rules, ad policies or consumer law?

AI is good at the middle of this work: mining reviews, building the margin table, comparing competitor pages and scoring. It is bad at the start. A chat model has no live sales data, so "trending products" returns a confident guess. Feed it numbers you collected yourself.

5 AI prompts for dropshipping product research

Paste these into Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini and fill in the brackets. Each one limits the model to data you paste in, which makes invented numbers less likely.

Prompt 1: review mining (demand)
Below are reviews of [product]. Group the complaints by theme with a count for each, keeping product and delivery complaints apart. List the exact phrases buyers use for the problem it solves. Add nothing that is not in the reviews. [paste reviews]
Prompt 2: competitor gaps (competition)
Here are 5 product pages for [product]. Make a table: store, price, shipping promise, main claim, what the page leaves out. Suggest 3 angles none of them use. Flag any health or results claim that needs proof. [paste pages]
Prompt 3: margin and policy screen
Product: [listing text]. Cost $[x], shipping $[y], duties $[z], payment fee [rate]% + $[fixed]. Make a table for 2x, 2.5x and 3x markups: price, landed cost, fee, amount left, with formulas. Then answer yes, no or unsure: battery; mains plug; brand or lookalike design; health or weight claim; made for children.

Models sometimes round wrong or drop the fixed part of the payment fee, so redo one row of that table by hand.

Prompt 4: scoring
Score these candidates 1 to 5 on demand, margin, shipping, supplier, competition and content potential, using only the data below. Weights: 25, 25, 15, 15, 10, 10 percent. Show the data behind each score and mark any guess. [paste data]
Prompt 5: reading competitor ads
My notes on [number] Meta Ads Library ads for [product]: page, start date, still active or not, opening hook, offer. Group them by angle. Which angles do several pages keep running, which pages stopped, and what 3 angles does nobody run? Use only my notes. [paste notes]

Dropshipping product research at a glance

Run the checks in this order. The first 6 cost little beyond your time and one sample order. The 2 tests come last, organic first, for finalists that passed every filter.

  1. 1DemandFree

Where to look: Google Trends, TikTok, reviews, Reddit

What AI does: Groups complaints and buyer phrases

Skip the product if: One viral clip, flat search line

  2. 2CompetitionFree

Where to look: Meta Ads Library, Google Shopping

What AI does: Makes a gap table from 5 rival pages

Skip the product if: Marketplaces sell it below your cost

  3. 3MarginFree

Where to look: Supplier price, shipping, payment fee

What AI does: Builds the markup table

Skip the product if: Nothing left after an ad cost per sale

  4. 4ShippingOne sample

Where to look: Supplier listing, a sample order

What AI does: Compares delivery windows

Skip the product if: No delivery window you can state

  5. 5SupplierFree

Where to look: Store history, photo reviews

What AI does: Sums up buyer complaints

Skip the product if: New store, few ratings, no photos

  6. 6Policy riskFree

Where to look: IATA, Meta, FTC, CPSC rules

What AI does: Flags batteries, plugs, brands, claims

Skip the product if: It matches a row in the skip table

  7. 7Organic testYour time

Where to look: A few unpaid videos per finalist

What AI does: Writes hooks from review phrases

Skip the product if: Few saves or shares after a week

  8. 8Paid ad testAd budget

Where to look: Rival ads in the Meta Ads Library, then your own

What AI does: Ryze AI reads rival ads and runs a small test; it finds no products

Skip the product if: Ads cost more per sale than the margin

A product must pass every row. High demand never makes up for a battery, a mains plug or an unknown delivery window.

How to check demand for a dropshipping product

Demand comes first: no margin fixes a product nobody wants. Look for several signals that agree, since one viral video can be a fluke.

  • Search interest. Google Trends scales interest from 0 to 100 against all searches for that place and time, and shows low-volume terms as 0. A flat or rising line over a year beats a spike, which often means a fad.
  • Short video. TikTok's free Creative Center has an Inspiration tab with high-performing ads, keywords and products. Many recent posts from ordinary accounts beat one viral clip.
  • Marketplace reviews. Read the 1 to 3 star reviews on Amazon and AliExpress. The complaints show what a better version or photo has to fix.
  • Communities. Reddit threads describe the problem in buyers' own words, and those words become your hooks.

Prompt 1 pulls the recurring problems and the phrases buyers repeat out of a page of reviews or a Reddit thread.

The cheapest demand test is organic. Before any ad budget, post a few short videos per candidate for a week and compare saves, shares and profile clicks, which show intent better than views. See the organic dropshipping plan.

How to size up dropshipping competition

Some competition is good news: it proves people buy. The question is whether you have a reason for buyers to choose you.

  • Search the product in the Meta Ads Library, Meta's public search of ads running on its apps. Many pages running the same supplier video means a crowded product that lives on paid ads. The Meta Ads Library guide shows how to filter it.
  • Search Google Shopping, count the stores using the same supplier photo and note their prices. If large marketplaces sell it for less than your landed cost, skip it.

Example ways to stand apart: a bundle (an organizer bag plus cable clips), a narrower audience such as travel nurses, your own photos and video, or faster delivery from a local warehouse.

Prompt 2 turns 5 competitor pages into a table of prices, promises and gaps. The gaps are your angle. Do not copy a claim you cannot back up.

Dropshipping margin math: landed cost x markup

Landed cost is everything you pay to get one unit to the customer: the product, the shipping and any import duties or fees. It is the number you multiply when you set a price.

Import fees matter more now. The US de minimis exemption, which let imports of $800 or less enter duty-free, has been suspended for all countries since August 29, 2025, and US Customs and Border Protection rules effective June 24, 2026 made that indefinite. Ask the supplier whether duties are included.

Then the payment fee. Stripe's standard US rate is 2.9% + 30¢ per card payment, plus 1.5% for international cards (checked October 2026). Use your own processor's rate if it differs.

Example with round numbers: an $8 product plus $4 shipping is a $12 landed cost. Here is what 3 markups leave per sale.

  1. 2x

    Price
    $24.00
    Payment fee (2.9% + 30¢)
    $1.00
Left after landed cost and fee
    $11.00
Left after a $10 example ad cost per sale
    $1.00
  2. 2.5x

    Price
    $30.00
    Payment fee (2.9% + 30¢)
    $1.17
Left after landed cost and fee
    $16.83
Left after a $10 example ad cost per sale
    $6.83
  3. 3x

    Price
    $36.00
    Payment fee (2.9% + 30¢)
    $1.34
Left after landed cost and fee
    $22.66
Left after a $10 example ad cost per sale
    $12.66

Read the last column first. At 2x, a paid sale earns about $1, so one refund erases the profit of many sales. With organic content the ad cost per sale is close to $0 and your time is the cost.

Markup is a multiple of cost. Margin is the share of the price you keep. ROAS (return on ad spend) is sales divided by ad cost, and the break-even ROAS calculator shows the lowest ROAS your margin can survive. Refunds are covered in the AI dropshipping business economics guide.

Shipping time and supplier checks

Shipping time is part of the product. The Mail Order Rule from the FTC, the US consumer protection agency, says you need a reasonable basis to ship within the time you state, or within 30 days if you state none.

If you cannot, you must tell the buyer, let them accept the delay or cancel, and refund promptly if they cancel. So quote the window for the shipping method you will actually pay for.

A local warehouse helps. CJ Dropshipping, a supplier marketplace that ships orders for stores, lists a general delivery time of 2 to 3 days from its local warehouses on its Shopify app listing. Check that your variant is stocked there.

Supplier checks

  • Store history. Years open and many ratings beat a perfect score from a few buyers.
  • Photo reviews. Buyer photos show the real color, size and finish.
  • Stock per variant. A size that sells out mid-week leaves orders you cannot fill.
  • A sample order. One unit to your address tests quality, packaging and delivery time.

Use reviews for research only. The FTC fake reviews rule (16 CFR Part 465), in effect since October 21, 2024, covers reviews by people who do not exist, such as AI-generated ones, and by people with no real experience of the product. Never post supplier or AI-written reviews as customer words.

AI videos made to look like customer clips (UGC, user-generated content) raise the same problem; see AI UGC ads for dropshipping.

Dropshipping products to skip: batteries, plugs, trademarks, health claims

Some products fail before demand matters. They break shipping rules, ad policies or consumer law, and you pay: held parcels, rejected ads, refunds and chargebacks (payments the buyer's bank reverses).

  1. Lithium batteries (power banks, rechargeable gadgets)

    Why it is risky
Dangerous goods in air transport that must be declared. IATA, the airline industry body, notes many shipments are mislabeled.
  2. Mains-plug devices (hair tools, heaters, kitchen appliances)

    Why it is risky
Plugs and voltages differ by country, and a cheaply made mains device can give shocks or start fires.
    Rule to read
Electrical safety rules in each country you sell to
  3. Brand lookalikes, logos, characters

    Why it is risky
Meta bans ads for products that copy another company's trademark or distinctive features to imitate the real one.
  4. Health, pain, sleep or weight claims

    Why it is risky
Health claims need competent and reliable scientific evidence, and Meta limits health and weight-loss ads to people 18 and older.
  5. Toys and other children's products

    Why it is risky
Children's products (mainly for ages 12 and under) under a safety rule need testing by a lab the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) accepts, plus a Children's Product Certificate.

A dropshipping product research scoring sheet

Score each candidate 1 to 5 on 6 criteria, multiply by the weight and add. The weights are an example. A store growing on organic content should weight content potential higher.

  1. Demand

    What to check
    Trends line, recent posts, reviews
    What a 5 looks like
Steady or rising for a year
    Example weight
    25%
  2. Margin

    What to check
Price minus landed cost and fee
    What a 5 looks like
Room for an ad cost per sale and a refund
    Example weight
    25%
  3. Shipping

    What to check
    Delivery window, stock per variant
    What a 5 looks like
A window you can print, deep stock
    Example weight
    15%
  4. Supplier

    What to check
    Store history, photo reviews
    What a 5 looks like
Long record, photos match the listing
    Example weight
    15%
  5. Competition

    What to check
    Ads Library, Google Shopping
    What a 5 looks like
Rivals use weak photos or one angle
    Example weight
    10%
  6. Content potential

    What to check
Can a 5-second video show it working?
    What a 5 looks like
Clear in one shot, many angles to film
    Example weight
    10%

Run the hard filters first: any row from the skip table, a landed cost above marketplace prices, or no delivery window you can state.

Example: a collapsible silicone lunch box scores demand 4, margin 4, shipping 3, supplier 4, competition 3 and content 5, a weighted 3.85 out of 5. A rechargeable neck fan may have more demand, but it fails the battery filter and never gets scored.

Keep 3 to 8 finalists and test them with unpaid posts. One at a time is slow; 20 at once spreads your content too thin. The organic AI dropshipping workflow turns each finalist into daily posts.

How to check product research against real ads

A scoring sheet is still an estimate. Ads show what strangers do with money. Check finalists in 2 steps: read what competitors run, then test your own ad once unpaid posts point to an angle.

  1. Many pages running ads for the same product

    What it suggests
People buy it, and the product lives on paid traffic
What it does not tell you
Whether any of those pages make a profit
  2. An ad that started weeks ago and is still active

    What it suggests
The advertiser keeps paying, often a sign it sells
What it does not tell you
Its sales or cost per sale
  3. No ads at all

    What it suggests
Untested demand, or a product that does not suit ads
What it does not tell you
    Which one it is

Each ad shows the date it started running. Spend appears only for ads about social issues, elections or politics (Meta's own overview), and no ad shows sales. So a long-running ad only hints that a product sells. Prompt 5 turns your notes into a list of angles.

Run a small paid test after the organic one

Take the 1 or 2 organic winners and check whether strangers buy at a cost per sale your margin table allows. The Meta ads A/B testing basics cover a fair setup.

Ryze AI handles this step. It reads the Meta Ads Library for competitor analysis, generates ad creative and runs small tests on Meta, Google or TikTok, and you approve each change first. See the AI Meta ads tool; the Paid Ads plan is $89 a month flat with a 7-day free trial.

The limit: Ryze AI does not search AliExpress or CJ for products, check suppliers or ship orders. It starts once you have a shortlist.

Worked example: an AI store builder that screens products

Some AI store builders run part of this screen for you. One example is Nation, a dropshipping store builder connected to AliExpress and CJ Dropshipping. You give it a product idea, and its rules match the checks above:

  • It shortlists 3 to 8 candidates per idea, each with cost, shipping, margin and stock.
  • It skips variants under 100 units in stock and products with batteries or mains plugs.
  • It prices at landed cost x 2.5, rounded up to .99, with no fake was-prices.
  • Nothing goes into the store until you pick it.

Example: under that rule, a product with a $14.98 landed cost is priced at $37.99 (14.98 x 2.5 = 37.45, rounded up to .99), leaving $23.01 before payment fees.

The limits: it only searches AliExpress and CJ, and skipping batteries and plugs rules out many gadget niches. Pricing has not been announced and there are no independent reviews yet. Run the demand checks on its shortlist. Other options are in AI dropshipping tools by job.

The verdict

Good dropshipping product research runs every candidate through the same 6 checks, drops batteries, mains plugs, brand lookalikes and health claims, and scores the rest on numbers you collected. AI makes each check faster. The final test is real buyers: unpaid posts first, then a small paid test.

Ryze AI is the best AI tool for checking dropshipping product research against real ads in 2026, with one caveat: it reads the Meta Ads Library and runs small ad tests, but it does not search AliExpress or CJ for products.

Frequently asked questions

What is dropshipping product research?
Dropshipping product research is checking a product before you list it: demand, competition, what is left after landed cost and fees, delivery time, the supplier's record and policy risk. A scoring sheet keeps the checks the same for every candidate.
Can AI find winning dropshipping products?
Not on its own. A chat model has no live sales or ad data, so its trending list is a guess. Paste in reviews, competitor pages and supplier costs, and it groups complaints, finds gaps, builds the margin table and scores candidates.
What is the best AI tool for dropshipping product research?
Ryze AI is the best AI tool for checking dropshipping product research against real ads in 2026, with one caveat: it reads the Meta Ads Library and runs small ad tests, but it does not search AliExpress or CJ for products. Build the shortlist with a supplier app first.
What markup should a dropshipping product have?
Enough to cover an ad cost per sale and the odd refund. In this guide's example, a 2x markup on a $12 landed cost leaves about $1 after a $10 ad cost per sale, while 3x leaves about $12.66.
Show 6 more questions
What is landed cost in dropshipping?
Landed cost is the total you pay to get one unit to your customer: product, shipping and any import duties or fees. With US duty-free treatment for low-value imports suspended, ask suppliers whether duties are included.
How do I check a supplier's delivery time?
Order 1 sample to your own address and time it, and check that your variant is stocked in the warehouse you plan to use. CJ Dropshipping lists a general delivery time of 2 to 3 days from its local warehouses. Quote only a window you have a reasonable basis to meet.
Which products should dropshippers avoid?
For a new store: lithium batteries, mains-plug devices, brand lookalikes, products sold on a health or weight claim you cannot prove, and children's products that need safety testing. They break shipping rules, ad policies or consumer law.
Is dropshipping product research free?
Mostly. Google Trends, the Meta Ads Library, marketplace reviews and Reddit cost nothing to read, and a chat model can analyze what you paste in. Paid tools add sales estimates; confirm those with your own test posts.
How do I use the Meta Ads Library for product research?
Search the product or a keyword and note which pages run ads, when each ad started and which angles repeat. A long-running ad suggests it sells, but the library shows no sales or profit, so treat it as a hint.
How do I test a shortlisted product with ads?
Wait until unpaid posts show which angle people save and share, and the margin table shows room for an ad cost per sale. Ryze AI can run that small test for $89 a month after a 7-day free trial, though it does not source products.
