Shopify Analytics — Sessions by Referrer
The fastest answer to how to know if ChatGPT is sending you Shopify traffic costs nothing and takes about two minutes. In your Shopify admin, go to Analytics, then Reports, and open the Sessions by referrer report (sometimes labeled “Sessions by source” depending on your plan). Scroll through the referrer list or use the search field and look for entries labeled chatgpt.com, chat.openai.com, or simply openai.
When a ChatGPT user clicks a link in their conversation and lands on your store with the referrer header intact, Shopify captures it cleanly under one of these hostnames. According to Shopify’s own Q1 2026 data, this channel grew 8x year-over-year across their merchant base — so if your store has even moderate traffic, you may already have sessions here. The limitation is that referrer headers are stripped in some browsing contexts, meaning a portion of your ChatGPT traffic lands in the “direct” bucket instead. Combine this with method #4 and #6 for a complete picture.
