Shopify Search & Discovery App
Shopify’s Search & Discovery app is the official tool for configuring how filters appear and behave across your collection pages. Released in 2022 and continuously updated, it lets you define which product attributes (color, size, brand, material, price range) appear as filters — and critically, controls whether filter combinations generate new URLs or stay client-side.
From an SEO standpoint, its most important setting is filter URL behavior. When configured correctly, the app can keep filter selections as query parameters (e.g., ?filter.p.m.color=black) rather than generating new path-based URLs, dramatically reducing the number of crawlable page variants. It also supports metafield-based filtering, which is essential for stores that want to rank individual filtered pages like /collections/sofas?filter.p.m.material=velvet for long-tail queries.
The limitation is what it does not do: it does not automatically add canonical tags, generate collection page copy, or flag which filter combinations are worth indexing. For that layer of optimization, you need the approaches below — or an autonomous tool like Ryze AI that handles it end-to-end.
