Google Search Console sitemap submission
If you have not yet submitted your Shopify sitemap to Google Search Console, do it before anything else. Navigate to GSC, open Indexing › Sitemaps, paste sitemap.xml into the “Add a new sitemap” field, and click Submit. You do not need the full domain — GSC knows which property you are in.
Once submitted, GSC begins tracking your sitemap’s coverage. The Indexing › Pages report will start showing you which URLs are indexed, which are discovered but not yet indexed, and which are excluded and why. This visibility is invaluable: you cannot fix what you cannot see.
A common mistake is submitting once and never returning. Shopify updates your sitemap automatically whenever you publish new content, but GSC may take time to pick up the change. If you launch a major collection or product drop, re-submitting the sitemap URL pings Google that something new is worth prioritising. Pair this with the Shopify SEO checklist to ensure your pages are technically ready before Google crawls them.
