Shopify Admin (manual editing)
Shopify’s built-in SEO editing is the starting point for every merchant. Navigate to Products › Collections, open any collection, scroll to the “Search engine listing preview” section, click “Edit website SEO”, and you can type your title tag (up to 70 characters displayed) and meta description (up to 320 characters stored, though Google typically shows 150–160) directly. Changes save instantly and Shopify pushes the updated meta tags to the live page within minutes.
The fundamental problem is one-at-a-time editing with no bulk workflow. A store with 40 collections needs 40 separate edit sessions. There is no character counter warning you when you hit 60 characters on the title, no duplicate detection, and no visibility into which collections are still using Shopify’s auto-generated fallback. For stores serious about title tag and meta description optimisation across Shopify collections, this quickly becomes a bottleneck. Use it to get started and for high-priority collections; graduate to an app or Liquid template as the catalogue grows.
