Shopify Markets (native setup)
Shopify Markets is the native engine for international SEO for Shopify Markets and multi-currency stores, and since its 2021 launch it has removed most of the technical debt that plagued global Shopify stores. When you configure a market, Shopify automatically generates hreflang tags connecting your language/region variants, assigns self-referencing canonical URLs to each version, includes each market in the XML sitemap, and handles browser-based redirection — all without a plugin.
The URL structure defaults to subfolders: yourstore.com/fr for French, yourstore.com/de for German, yourstore.com/en-ca for Canadian English. Shopify Plus merchants can assign country-code top-level domains (ccTLDs) instead, which send a stronger local relevance signal to Google but require more DNS management. For most stores, subfolders are the right call — faster to implement, easier to maintain, and sufficient for strong local rankings.
The catch: hreflang tags only work correctly if your translated pages are published and properly linked in your store navigation. Orphaned translated pages — published but not linked — are one of the most common international SEO errors we found in our audit. Multi-currency display is handled by Shopify Payments, which shows prices in the visitor’s local currency without creating separate indexed URLs, keeping your duplicate-content risk low. Pair this native setup with a real content localization strategy and ongoing monitoring like Ryze AI and it is a powerful foundation.
