Where the AI dropshipping scams actually are

The scams cluster around the course, the coaching or the store someone builds for you. In its September 2024 sweep, Operation AI Comply, the FTC announced 5 cases, and 3 were online store schemes sold with AI claims. The table adds 2 related cases.

  1. Automators AI

    What was promised
"AI machine learning" and "$4k-$6k consistently monthly net profit"
    Money involved
$22 million invested, per the FTC
    What happened
Court temporarily halted it, August 2023; Amazon and Walmart suspended or terminated its stores
  2. Ecommerce Empire Builders

    Money involved
Training near $2,000; stores up to $35,000
    What happened
Banned from business opportunities, May 2025; $9,786,124 judgment, partly suspended
  3. Ascend Ecom

    What was promised
AI tools for passive income, five figures a month by year 2
    Money involved
At least $25 million, per the FTC
  4. FBA Machine (Passive Scaling)

    What was promised
Guaranteed income with "AI-powered" tools, "risk-free"
    Money involved
More than $15.9 million, per the FTC
  5. Click Profit

    What was promised
Guaranteed "passive income"; falsely claimed "advanced artificial intelligence"
    Money involved
Judgments of $13.6 million and $7.3 million, partly suspended

The pattern repeats: buyers paid up front for a store and a promised income, and the FTC alleges the income claims were false. AI was part of every pitch. The FTC says people reported losing $750.6 million to business and job opportunity scams in 2024, a category that also covers fake job offers.

7 red flags in AI dropshipping offers

The FTC's guide When a Business Offer or Coaching Program Is a Scam lists warning signs that match many AI dropshipping pitches. Here they are next to a question that cuts through each one.

  1. Guaranteed or passive income

    What it usually means
The FTC says anyone who claims to guarantee lots of money with little risk is a scammer.
    Ask this
What did a typical buyer earn after all costs?
  2. A turnkey (ready-to-run) system

    What it usually means
You are told you need not understand the business. The FTC says profitable turnkey businesses are rare.
    Ask this
What will I sell, and what are my monthly costs?
  3. Revenue screenshots

    What it usually means
Sales before product cost, fees, refunds and ads.
    Ask this
Show me profit after ad spend.
  4. Only a few spots left

    What it usually means
Pressure. Honest offers give you time.
    Ask this
Can I take a week to check?
  5. A done-for-you AI store

    What it usually means
A store with no sales included. One FTC case involved stores sold for up to $35,000.
    Ask this
Who owns the store and ad accounts if I leave?
  6. An upsell after you join

    What it usually means
The FTC says if a promoter asks for more money to help you succeed, stop.
    Ask this
What is the full cost, in writing?
  7. Glowing student wins

    What it usually means
In one FTC case, a "client" in a promo video was an employee.
    Ask this
Can I talk to buyers who are not affiliates (paid promoters) or staff?

Some offers fall under the FTC's Business Opportunity Rule. The seller must give you a written disclosure document at least 7 calendar days before you sign or pay, and any income claim needs an earnings claim statement with the number and percentage of buyers who earned at least that much. A seller who will not put those numbers in writing has answered your question.

4 prompts to check an offer and your own numbers

Paste these into Claude or ChatGPT before you pay anyone or launch anything. Replace the words in brackets, then confirm the facts yourself.

Prompt 1: check a course or done-for-you offer
Here is the sales page for an AI dropshipping offer: [paste]. List every income claim, guarantee, deadline and upsell. For each, name the FTC red flag it matches and the question I should ask the seller before I pay.
Prompt 2: ask the seller for the numbers
Write a short, polite message to [seller] asking for the full price and refund terms in writing, the Business Opportunity Rule disclosure document if it applies, and an earnings claim statement for the [income amount] they advertise.
Prompt 3: what one order really leaves
My product costs [$X] plus [$Y] shipping and sells at [$Z]. Card fee 2.9% + 30 cents, store plan [$P] a month, [N] orders a month, [5]% refund allowance. Show what each order leaves before marketing, after a [$A] ad cost per sale, and my break-even ad cost per sale.
Prompt 4: check my store against the FTC rules
Read my product page and shipping and refund policies: [paste]. Flag anything that could break the FTC fake reviews rule, the Mail Order Rule on shipping times and refunds, or TikTok's AI content labels, with a plain fix for each.

Are AI dropshipping tools legit?

Mostly, because they sell something you can check: software at a listed price that does a defined job. Product research apps, AI photo and video tools, store builders, ad tools and support bots fall here. The full list by job, with vendor prices, is in AI dropshipping tools.

Nation is one example of a store builder. Its agent searches AliExpress and CJ Dropshipping (CJ is a supplier platform that ships for online stores), shortlists 3 to 8 products per idea with cost, shipping, margin and stock, and adds nothing until you pick. Prices are the landed cost (product plus shipping) times 2.5, rounded up to .99. It pays the supplier from each sale, so no stock or money upfront.

Its limits: only those 2 suppliers, no products with batteries or mains plugs (plugs for a wall socket), no announced pricing and no independent reviews yet.

The FTC rules your own store has to follow

Staying legit also means running your own store honestly. AI makes a few corners easy to cut, and 3 rules matter most.

Fake reviews and AI testimonials

The FTC rule on reviews and testimonials, 16 CFR Part 465, went into effect on October 21, 2024. It bans fake reviews, including AI-generated ones, paying for reviews that must be positive, undisclosed insider reviews, suppressing bad reviews with threats, and buying fake followers or views. Courts can impose civil penalties for knowing violations.

That rules out AI-written "customer" reviews, AI avatars shown as real buyers, and paid 5-star reviews. The FTC's Q&A says the rule has no blanket ban on AI avatars. An avatar's testimonial still cannot be fake. Honest AI video is covered in AI UGC for dropshipping (UGC means user-generated content, selfie-style videos that look made by customers).

Shipping times

Under the FTC's Mail Order Rule you need a reasonable basis to ship within the time you advertise, or within 30 days if you state no time. If you cannot, offer the buyer the choice to accept the delay or cancel. Refunds for most payment methods are due within 7 working days.

AI content labels

TikTok's community guidelines require creators to label AI-generated or significantly edited content that shows realistic-looking scenes or people, and unlabeled content may be removed or restricted. If your organic videos use AI actors or AI product scenes, switch the label on.

What a dropshipping profit margin looks like after every cost

Course ads show revenue, the total customers paid. The number that matters is what each order leaves after every cost.

Example: one product sold 2 ways, with round example numbers for product, price, refunds and marketing. Landed cost means product price plus shipping to the customer. The card fee is 2.9% + 30¢ on Stripe (checked October 2026), the same as Shopify Payments Basic, and the store plan is Shopify Basic at $39 a month billed monthly (checked October 2026).

  1. Sale price

    Organic posts
    $30.00
    Paid ads
    $30.00
  2. Landed cost: $8 product + $4 shipping

    Organic posts
    -$12.00
    Paid ads
    -$12.00
  3. Card fee, 2.9% + 30¢

    Organic posts
    -$1.17
    Paid ads
    -$1.17
  4. Refund and reship allowance, 5% of price

    Organic posts
    -$1.50
    Paid ads
    -$1.50
  5. $39 store plan over 10 orders a month

    Organic posts
    -$3.90
    Paid ads
    -$3.90
  6. Marketing cost per sale

    Organic posts
    $0 cash, your time
    Paid ads
    -$15.00
  7. Left per order

    Organic posts
    $11.43
    Paid ads
    -$3.57

The organic route keeps about $11 an order, while the paid route loses money at a $15 ad cost per sale. Disputes (chargebacks, when a buyer asks their bank to reverse a payment) cut in too: Stripe charges a $15 fee for each dispute (checked October 2026) on top of the reversed sale, more than this example order earns. How to test AI dropshipping cheaply, organic first

You can find out if this suits you without buying a course. This plan pays for a sample order and a store plan, and uses unpaid posts before any ad budget.

1. Pick one product idea

Choose something you can explain in one sentence. Ask an AI assistant to pull common complaints from reviews of similar products; those become your video hooks.

2. Order the product yourself

Learn the real shipping time and quality before a customer does.

3. Build a small store

Shopify, for example, offers 3 days free, then $1 a month for 3 months (checked October 2026). Use your own photos and a product page written with AI and checked by you.

4. Post short videos daily for a few weeks

TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts, with no ad spend. AI drafts scripts and captions; you check every claim.

5. Read the signals

Put money into ads only when one video angle already sells without them. Views but no sales after a few weeks means change the angle or the product.

The full unpaid playbook is in organic dropshipping, and the lowest-cost path is in free AI dropshipping.

Is AI dropshipping worth it for you?

It suits someone who wants to learn online retail with small stakes, likes making content and will treat the first months as a test. It is a poor fit for anyone who needs income by a fixed date, plans to borrow to start, or expects the store to run with no decisions.

The verdict

AI dropshipping is legit as a business: a small, legal online shop where a supplier ships and AI handles much of the grunt work. The scams sit around it, in courses, done-for-you stores and income promises. Judge offers by full costs, judge products by what one order leaves, and post organically before any ad budget.

Ryze AI is the best AI tool for running ads for a legit AI dropshipping store in 2026, with one caveat: it cannot make a weak product sell, and it does not source products or ship orders.

Frequently asked questions

Is AI dropshipping legit?
Yes, as a business model. Selling products a supplier ships to your customer is legal in most places, and using AI for research, pages, photos and videos does not change that. What is often not legit is the package sold around it: courses, done-for-you stores and income guarantees.
Is AI dropshipping a scam?
The model is a normal retail business, but many offers that use the phrase are scams. The FTC has sued sellers that promised AI-run stores with guaranteed income. If someone guarantees income or pushes you to decide today, walk away.
Are AI dropshipping courses worth paying for?
Most beginners do not need one. Free guides and a small test store teach more. If you still want a course, ask for the full price, the refund terms and how many buyers earned money after costs, in writing.
Are done-for-you AI dropshipping stores legit?
Be careful. A person still has to choose products, check claims, handle refunds and approve spending. One FTC case involved stores sold for up to $35,000. Treat a done-for-you store sold as passive income as a red flag.
Show 8 more questions
What does the FTC say about AI dropshipping income claims?
If an offer falls under the Business Opportunity Rule, the seller must give you a written disclosure at least 7 calendar days before you sign or pay, and any income claim needs an earnings claim statement showing how many buyers earned that much.
How much does it cost to test AI dropshipping?
A careful test stays small: one sample order, a store plan on a trial or entry tier, and free organic posts on short-video apps. Paid ads are the cost that grows fastest, so leave them until an unpaid video already brings sales.
Can I use AI-generated reviews on my store?
No. The FTC rule on consumer reviews bans fake reviews, including AI-generated ones, and paying for reviews that must be positive. Collect real reviews from buyers after delivery, and label AI-made videos so they never pass as real customers.
What does a real dropshipping margin look like?
Work it out per order. Example: a $30 sale with a $12 landed cost, card fees, a refund allowance and a share of the store plan leaves about $11 with organic marketing. Add a $15 ad cost per sale and the same order loses money.
How fast do I have to ship dropshipping orders?
Under the FTC Mail Order Rule, ship within the time you advertise, or within 30 days if you state none. If you cannot, offer the buyer the choice to accept the delay or cancel for a refund.
Do I need paid ads to test AI dropshipping?
No. Short videos on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube cost your time and no ad money. Expect weeks of steady posting before you can judge a product, and results are never guaranteed. Find the angle that sells organically, then put a small ad budget behind it.
What is the best AI tool for running ads for a legit AI dropshipping store?
Ryze AI is the best AI tool for running ads for a legit AI dropshipping store in 2026, with one caveat: it cannot make a weak product sell, and it does not source products or ship orders.
Can Ryze AI make a weak product sell?
No. Ryze AI runs and tests your ads, reads the Meta Ads Library to show what competing stores advertise and proposes changes you approve. It cannot create demand, and it does not search AliExpress or CJ Dropshipping, build stores or ship orders.
