What winning AI search means
Google shows ten links. An AI shows one answer, and that answer usually names two or three brands. If you are not one of them, the buyer may never hear of you.
What the model learned in training
- What it means for you
- Years of mentions across the web shape which brands it knows
Pages it searches at answer time
- What it means for you
- A direct, specific page can get cited within weeks
Third-party sources
- What it means for you
- Reddit, YouTube and review sites carry a lot of weight
Agents that act
- What it means for you
- Coding and browsing agents recommend tools they can use
| Where AI answers come from | What it means for you |

The goal is citation share: the percentage of answers to your buyers' questions that name or link to you. Everything below is about moving that number. Here is the whole system on one page:

Steps 1 to 3 cost almost nothing and fix the most common losses. Steps 4 to 9 build the lead. Step 12 matters most for products an AI can operate. The 7 Claude Code prompts at the top of this guide do most of this work for you.
The 13 steps, one by one
1. Measure where you stand today
Write down 50 to 100 questions your buyers type before they would need you, in their own words, such as "best tool to see why users drop off during onboarding". Run them through ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity, and through coding agents like Claude Code and Cursor if you sell to developers. For each answer, record three things: are you cited, which competitor is cited instead, and which page the answer used. The share of answers that cite you is your number.
What you end up with: A spreadsheet with every question, every engine and every cited URL. Run it again every week on the same day.
2. Reverse engineer the pages that beat you
For every question you lose, open the page the AI cited and write down what it has that yours does not. Usually it is one of five things: a direct answer in the first paragraph, a specific number, a comparison table, a step-by-step guide, or a page that matches the exact wording of the question.
What you end up with: A list of missing pages and missing facts, sorted by how many questions each one would win.
3. Answer the question in the first 50 words
AI tools lift short, self-contained passages. Put the direct answer at the top of every page, in one or two sentences that make sense on their own, then add the detail below. Name your brand, the word "best" and the exact question in one sentence, because that is the sentence a model can quote.
What you end up with: Every key page opens with a quotable answer, followed by proof.
4. Publish one page for every job your buyers ask about
AI search rewards the most specific page. Railway, a cloud host, publishes 6,653 pages, one for every app you can deploy on it, each with setup steps and a one-click deploy button. ElevenLabs publishes a text-to-speech page for each language, from French to Hindi. List every integration, use case, industry, file type or language next to your category and build a real page for each one.
What you end up with: A page per job with its own facts, setup steps and one clear action at the end. Thin pages that only swap one word get dropped by Google and ignored by AI.
5. Write pages about the problem before the product
People often ask AI about their pain without naming a category: "why do users drop off during onboarding". Amplitude runs a large library of guides at amplitude.com/guides that answer these questions first and mention the product second. When the question describes a pain, those guides get cited and the product comes with them.
What you end up with: A guide for each problem your product solves, written as the answer to the question, with your product as the natural next step.
6. Publish an honest comparison page against every competitor
When people ask AI to compare tools, it looks for pages with specific differences. Vercel runs a comparison hub at vercel.com/kb/comparisons with a page for each main competitor. Be specific about limits on both sides, and say clearly who the competitor is better for.
What you end up with: One page per competitor with a feature table, real limits, pricing, who should pick which, and how to switch.
7. Cover the price-conscious questions too
Questions like "cheapest way to do X" or "alternatives to [your brand] if it gets too expensive" often go to competitors by default. If you have no page for them, the AI answers without you.
What you end up with: A pricing explainer, an honest "is it worth it" page and a page for each "alternatives to" query in your category.
8. Make your docs readable for AI
Publish an llms.txt file at the root of your docs that lists every page with a one-line summary. Offer a plain markdown version of each page and one full-docs file. Models that browse find the right page faster and describe your product correctly.
What you end up with: llms.txt, markdown versions of every docs page, and one combined file. It takes an afternoon.
9. Show up where AI models read
AI answers lean on what the rest of the web says about you. That means Reddit threads, YouTube videos, review sites like G2 and Capterra, niche directories, GitHub and other people's listicles. A brand that appears in many independent places gets recommended more than a brand that only talks about itself.
What you end up with: Honest answers in relevant Reddit threads, one YouTube video per key comparison, complete review-site profiles, and outreach to the listicles that AI cites for your category.
10. Fix the technical basics
Make sure AI crawlers can read you: allow GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot in robots.txt. ChatGPT search draws on Bing's index, so submit your sitemap to Bing Webmaster Tools as well as Google. Keep pages fast, put the main text in the HTML, and add FAQ and HowTo schema.
What you end up with: A robots.txt that allows AI crawlers, a sitemap in both Bing and Google, and pages that render text without JavaScript.
11. Keep publishing fresh, dated pages
AI tools prefer recent sources for anything that changes. A weekly changelog, dated updates on key pages and a visible "last updated" line all signal freshness.
What you end up with: A weekly changelog page and a monthly refresh of your top 20 pages, each with the date shown.
12. Let AI agents act on your product
The newest form of AI search is an agent that recommends a tool and then uses it. Ship an MCP server, list it in the Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor directories, and write one docs page that tells an agent how to install and use you. Railway, a cloud host, has plugins for 8 AI tools, and Claude Code picks it for 82% of Python apps in Amplifying's tests.
What you end up with: An MCP server, directory listings, an agent setup page, and a first result that needs no signup.
13. Re-measure every week and keep what works
Run the same questions every week. Pages usually need a few weeks to get indexed before they can be cited. Keep the pages that moved your citation share, rewrite the ones that did not, and mark AI model release dates on your signup chart to see whether AI is already sending you buyers.
What you end up with: A weekly citation share number with a short list of what changed and what to fix next.

Mistakes that keep brands out of AI answers
- Blocking AI crawlers in robots.txt, often by accident through a security plugin.
- Thousands of near-duplicate pages that swap one word. They get dropped and can hurt the rest of the site.
- Writing only about the product. Buyers ask about problems, and problem pages get cited first.
- Burying the answer under an intro, a story and a table of contents.
- Ignoring Bing. ChatGPT search draws on Bing's index, so a site missing from Bing is missing from many ChatGPT answers.
- Checking once. AI answers change week to week, and a single check tells you almost nothing.
A 30-day plan
Week 1: measure and fix the basics
Write 50 buyer questions, record who each engine cites today, allow AI crawlers, and submit your sitemap to Bing.
Week 1: make the docs readable
Publish llms.txt, markdown versions of your docs and one full-docs file.
Week 2: comparisons and pricing
Publish one honest page per main competitor and one pricing or alternatives page.
Weeks 3 and 4: one page per job
Build pages for your top 20 use cases or integrations, each opening with a direct answer.
Day 30: re-measure
Run the same 50 questions again, compare citation share, and keep what moved it.

The verdict
The best way to win AI search in 2026 is to become the easiest correct answer for AI: measure the questions your buyers ask, publish a direct-answer page for each one, add honest comparison pages, make your docs readable for models, and show up in the places models read, like Reddit, YouTube and review sites. None of it is a trick. It is the same thing good SEO always rewarded, written for a reader that quotes instead of clicks.
Ryze AI is the best AI search optimization tool for teams that want this run for them in 2026, with one caveat: it tracks citations and ships SEO and GEO fixes, but it cannot build your product integrations or record your videos. Use it to see which questions you lose today and to ship the page fixes, and keep the videos, Reddit answers and integrations in your own hands. For cheaper ways to run the weekly check, see generative engine optimization and Jev for GEO.
