01 · Overview
What the Ryze AI Ahrefs MCP server is
The short version
- 01Ahrefs connects to a Ryze AI workspace with your own Ahrefs API key. Your AI client then connects to Ryze AI with one URL (see Setup).
- 02One tool,
ahrefs__read, runs read-only Ahrefs API v3 requests. It cannot change anything in Ahrefs. - 03It reaches Domain Rating, site metrics, backlinks, broken backlinks, referring domains, anchors, organic keywords, Keywords Explorer overview and your API limits.
- 04Every call spends your own Ahrefs API units, not Ryze AI credits. The Ahrefs plan must include the API.
- 05Works with any Ryze AI plan or trial. SEO Starter is $129/mo with a 3-day free trial.

“Ahrefs MCP” can mean more than one thing in 2026. Ahrefs runs its own hosted MCP server at https://api.ahrefs.com/mcp/mcp for accounts on a Lite plan or higher, with a connector in Claude and a setup guide for ChatGPT. Ahrefs also publishes a REST API (v3) that any script can call, and developers self-host community servers from GitHub. The Ryze AI server sits on the REST API with your key and puts the results next to Search Console, GA4 and ad data. This page documents the Ryze AI server and compares it with Ahrefs’ own in section 06.
One caveat on this page: the tool name comes from the Ryze AI app source, and no workspace had Ahrefs connected when it was checked, so the tool list was not read from a live connector.
01
Your own API key
You generate a key in Ahrefs and paste it into the Ahrefs card in Ryze AI. There is no OAuth screen on the Ahrefs side and no bridge to host.
02
Backlink reports
Backlinks, broken backlinks, referring domains and anchor text for a domain, subdomain, path or URL come back as rows the agent can sort and filter in the chat.
03
Authority and site metrics
Domain Rating and the site metrics Ahrefs reports for a target, so a competitor check does not need a trip to the Ahrefs dashboard.
04
Organic keywords
The keywords a site ranks for, which the agent can set next to Search Console queries for the same pages.
05
Keywords Explorer overview
Overview data for the keywords you name in a chosen country, for sizing a topic before anything is written.
06
Limits and usage check
The same tool reads your Ahrefs API limits and units used, so you can ask what a run cost before starting the next one.
07
Read only by design
The Ahrefs tool is sent as GET, so the connector cannot change a project, a list or a setting in your Ahrefs account.
08
Data from three sources in one chat
Search Console, GA4 and the ad platforms answer on the same URL, so a prompt can join link data with clicks and spend.
02 · Tool reference
One Ahrefs tool and the reports behind it
Ahrefs has a single tool in Ryze AI, and it only reads. The agent picks the report, the target and the columns for each question, so the useful part is knowing which Ahrefs reports exist and what each one costs in units (see section 07).
| Tool | Access | What it does | Covers |
|---|---|---|---|
ahrefs__read | read | Runs a read-only Ahrefs API v3 GET request. Covers Domain Rating, site metrics, referring domains, backlinks, broken backlinks, anchors, organic keywords, Keywords Explorer overview, and API limits and usage. | Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer, subscription limits |
Ahrefs API v3 reports the tool can reach
| Report | API path under api.ahrefs.com/v3 | Ahrefs tool |
|---|---|---|
| Domain Rating | site-explorer/domain-rating | Site Explorer |
| Site metrics | site-explorer/metrics | Site Explorer |
| Backlinks | site-explorer/all-backlinks | Site Explorer |
| Broken backlinks | site-explorer/broken-backlinks | Site Explorer |
| Referring domains | site-explorer/refdomains | Site Explorer |
| Anchors | site-explorer/anchors | Site Explorer |
| Organic keywords | site-explorer/organic-keywords | Site Explorer |
| Keyword overview | keywords-explorer/overview | Keywords Explorer |
| Limits and usage | subscription-info/limits-and-usage | Subscription information |
Paths from the Ahrefs OpenAPI reference, checked Nov 8, 2026. All Ahrefs data endpoints are GET with query-string parameters; a select parameter lists the columns to return and where filters rows. Ryze AI does not publish the tool’s input schema. Ad and analytics tools on the same URL are documented on Google Ads MCP, Meta Ads MCP and Google Analytics MCP.
03 · SEO use cases
Join backlink and keyword data with search data
Ahrefs knows who links to you and what you rank for. Search Console and GA4 know what people clicked and did. Each pair below is a question that needs both halves, and the join key is the page URL.
| Ahrefs report | What Ahrefs returns | Search data to join | Question it answers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Broken backlinks | Target pages that return 404 | Search Console clicks for the same URL | Which dead pages are worth a redirect |
| Organic keywords | Keyword and position per ranking URL | Search Console queries and average position | Keywords sitting just off page one |
| Referring domains | Linking sites per target | GA4 sessions to the linked page | Which links send visitors |
| Keyword overview | Volume and difficulty for a country | Your own click data for similar queries | Topics worth a new page |
Each Ahrefs read spends units, so ask for the columns you need. Search Console and GA4 reads do not touch your Ahrefs balance.
- “List broken backlinks pointing at our domain, then check which of those URLs still get Search Console impressions.”
- “Which referring domains link to our pricing page, and what anchor text do they use?”
- “Show the anchors that appear most often in our backlinks, and flag any that look off brand.”
- “Pull the organic keywords our blog ranks for and mark the ones Search Console shows between positions 8 and 20.”
- “Give me the Keywords Explorer overview for these 10 keywords in the United States.”
- “Compare the organic keywords of our domain with a competitor domain I name and list the gaps.”
- “What is the Domain Rating of these 6 domains I am considering for outreach?”
- “Read the site metrics for our domain and for the two competitors I paste.”
- “Rank these prospect sites by referring domains and flag the ones that already link to a competitor.”
- “Check my Ahrefs API limits and usage before you start.”
- “Run the smallest request that answers this question and tell me how many rows you asked for.”
- “Use Ahrefs free test targets first so I can see the report shape before spending units.”
Every answer comes from your own Ahrefs account and Search Console property, so no sample numbers are shown here. A longer walk-through of Search Console in Claude is in how to connect Claude to Google Search Console.
04 · Setup
Connect Ahrefs once, then add the URL to each client
Step 1: link Ahrefs in Ryze AI with an API key
- 01In Ahrefs, open Account settings, then API keys, click Generate API key, name it (for example Ryze AI) and copy it.
- 02In the Ryze AI app, open Integrations and click Connect on the Ahrefs card.
- 03Paste the key into API key and click Continue. The card shows Ahrefs as connected.
- 04Prefer to stay in the chat? Ask the Ryze AI agent in Claude or ChatGPT to connect Ahrefs. It sends a one-time link, valid once and for 24 hours, to a page where you paste the key.
Details and error fixes are in the Ryze AI Ahrefs guide. Your Ahrefs plan has to include API access, and only Ahrefs owners and admins can create the key.
Claude on the web or desktop
- 01Go to Customize, Connectors.
- 02Choose + Add, then Add custom connector. Enter Ryze AI as the name and
https://connector.get-ryze.ai/mcpas the MCP server URL, then keep OAuth sign-in on. No client ID or secret is needed. - 03Press Connect, sign in to Ryze AI, tick the workspace that holds Ahrefs and press Allow connection.
- 04Connected Ahrefs after adding the connector? Claude keeps the tool list it saw at the start, so remove the connector, add it again and start a new chat.
Any Claude plan works, and Free holds one custom connector. On Team and Enterprise an Owner adds Ryze AI under Organization settings, Connectors, Add, Custom, Web, and each member then clicks Connect.
ChatGPT
OpenAI documents custom MCP connections on ChatGPT web for Business and Enterprise/Edu, and read and fetch only on Pro. The Ahrefs tool only reads, so a Pro connection can use it. Go to Plugins, choose the plus button, then Add custom MCP server, name it Ryze AI, paste the URL, choose OAuth, create it and sign in to Ryze AI. On Business an admin or owner has to create and publish it first. ChatGPT freezes the tool list for an approved workspace, so an admin refreshes it after Ahrefs is connected.
Claude Code
claude mcp add --transport http ryze https://connector.get-ryze.ai/mcp --scope userType /mcp, choose ryze and finish sign-in in the browser. --scope user loads it in every project; --scope project writes a shared .mcp.json instead. Scripts can skip OAuth with a Ryze AI API key from Workspace Settings, Profile, API keys, sent as Authorization: Bearer rk_live_....
Cursor and VS Code
{ "mcpServers": {
"ryze": { "url": "https://connector.get-ryze.ai/mcp" }
} }{ "mcpServers": {
"ryze": { "type": "http", "url": "https://connector.get-ryze.ai/mcp" }
} }Cursor asks for approval before a tool runs by default and opens a sign-in window the first time. The developer page has an Add to Cursor link and the other config variants.
Grok Bot
The Ryze AI help center says Ryze AI is a built-in app in Grok Bot’s Connect apps: search Ryze AI, Add, sign in. If it is not listed, add it as a custom MCP server with the same URL. On grok.com, xAI documents adding a custom connector by URL; Ryze AI was not tested there.
05 · API key and permissions
Who can connect, and what the Ahrefs key reaches
| Who can create the key | Only Ahrefs workspace owners and admins can open Account settings, API keys and generate one. A member without that role asks an admin. |
| What the key reaches | The key reads whatever your Ahrefs API subscription reads, and it spends your units. Name it for Ryze AI so it is easy to find, and set a per-key limit in Ahrefs. |
| Key lifetime | The Ryze AI help center says each key is valid for one year. Ahrefs' docs let the admin pick an expiration date up to 10 years out, so read the date on the key you create. Ahrefs also invalidates a key when the user who created it leaves the workspace. |
| One connection per workspace | A Ryze AI workspace holds one Ahrefs connection. A different key can live in another workspace, and one Claude or ChatGPT connection covers up to 20 workspaces. |
Creating and managing the key
| Step | What to do |
|---|---|
| Generate the key | In Ahrefs open Account settings, API keys, click Generate API key, name it (for example Ryze AI) and copy it. |
| Limit it | On the same page you can cap the monthly units a single key may use. Ahrefs recommends limits while you test. |
| Paste it | In Ryze AI open Integrations, click Connect on the Ahrefs card, paste the key into API key and click Continue. |
| Switch keys later | Click View on the card, disconnect with the trash icon and connect again with the new key. |
Key rules from Ahrefs’ API key documentation, checked Nov 8, 2026; Ryze AI steps from the Ryze AI help center. Ahrefs allows up to 1,000 keys per workspace.
Removing access
In Ahrefs, delete the key under Account settings, API keys, which stops every call at once. In Ryze AI, open View on the Ahrefs card and use the trash icon. In Claude, open Customize, Connectors, Ryze AI and click Disconnect, which cuts off every workspace at once.
06 · Compare
Ryze AI vs Ahrefs’ own MCP server
Six things called Ahrefs MCP
| Option | Built for | How you connect | Ahrefs data | Changes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ryze AI hosted server | Marketers who want link data next to Search Console, GA4 and ad data | Ahrefs API key in Ryze AI, then OAuth sign-in from the client | Domain Rating, site metrics, backlinks, referring domains, anchors, organic keywords, keyword overview, API usage | Read only |
| Ahrefs hosted MCP server (api.ahrefs.com/mcp/mcp) | Anyone on an Ahrefs Lite plan or higher who wants the full Ahrefs toolset | OAuth consent in the client, or a generated MCP key | Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer, SERP overview, Rank Tracker, Site Audit, Brand Radar, Web Analytics, Search Console data, Content Helper and more | Account management group exists (projects, keyword lists) |
| Ahrefs connector in Claude's directory | Claude users who want the shortest setup | Customize, Connectors, Ahrefs, Connect, pick the workspace | Same server as above | Same server as above |
| Ahrefs in ChatGPT web | ChatGPT users | Developer mode, Create app, URL and OAuth | Same server as above | Same server as above |
| Ahrefs API v3 (REST) | Developers writing scripts | Bearer API key | Every endpoint in the OpenAPI spec | Management endpoints for Rank Tracker projects and keyword lists |
| Community servers on GitHub | Developers who self-host | Varies by repository | Depends on the repository | Depends on the repository |
Ahrefs describes its hosted server as available on paid plans from Lite, synced across devices, and says using the MCP endpoint from custom scripts or standalone HTTP clients is unsupported; scripts should use the public API. Sources: docs.ahrefs.com MCP introduction, tool categories, Claude and ChatGPT setup pages, checked Nov 8, 2026. Community servers were not reviewed for this page.
Ryze AI and Ahrefs’ hosted server side by side
| Ryze AI | Ahrefs hosted MCP | |
|---|---|---|
| Who sets it up | An Ahrefs owner or admin creates an API key; anyone with a Ryze AI workspace connects it | The Ahrefs account holder approves OAuth in the client, or generates an MCP key |
| Ahrefs plan | An Ahrefs API subscription. Ryze AI does not name a tier | Lite or higher, per Ahrefs |
| Credential | Your own Ahrefs API key | OAuth grant that creates a dedicated key tagged MCP, or a manual MCP key |
| Coverage | Backlinks, referring domains, anchors, Domain Rating, site metrics, organic keywords, keyword overview, API usage | 20 tool groups, including Rank Tracker, Site Audit, Brand Radar, Web Analytics and SERP overview |
| Other data in the same chat | Google Ads, Meta Ads, Search Console, GA4 and other Ryze AI platforms | Ahrefs only (its own groups include Search Console data you connected in Ahrefs) |
| Changes in Ahrefs | None, the tool is GET only | Management group can edit projects and lists |
| Billing | Your Ahrefs API units, plus a Ryze AI plan or trial | Your Ahrefs monthly API units |
| Clients | Claude, ChatGPT, Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf, VS Code, Grok Bot | Claude, ChatGPT, Claude Code, Copilot Studio, Lovable, n8n, Manus, Le Chat, OpenClaw |
As published on Nov 8, 2026. Ahrefs changes its tool groups, so check its documentation before you decide.
Which to pick: if the work stays inside Ahrefs and needs Site Audit, Rank Tracker, Brand Radar or SERP data, Ahrefs’ own server covers far more and is the better fit. Ryze AI fits when the question crosses tools, such as broken backlinks checked against Search Console impressions, or organic keywords set next to GA4 sessions, and when you want Ahrefs, Search Console and ad platforms behind one connector URL with a read-only Ahrefs tool.
07 · API limits
Ahrefs limits an agent runs into
| Request rate | 60 requests per minute by default. Past that the API answers 429 Too Many Requests, and Ahrefs may also throttle a request with a 429 when its systems are under load. |
| Minimum cost | Every billable request costs at least 50 API units, even for one row. |
| Cost per request | max(50, per-row cost x rows). The per-row cost adds every unique field in the result, the where filter or the order_by. Most fields cost 1 unit; some cost 5 or 10. |
| Cached responses | A request served from Ahrefs' cache does not consume units. |
| Free test queries | Site Explorer calls whose target is ahrefs.com, yep.com or firehose.com, and Keywords Explorer calls that use only those words as keywords, cost no units. A key is still needed and limit is capped at 100 rows. |
| Monthly allowance | Eligible paid plans include a monthly unit allowance. Plans that allow pay-as-you-go add charges after it is used up. Consumed units are not refunded. |
| Per-key caps | Owners and admins can cap a key's units under Account settings, API keys, and the pay-as-you-go ceiling under Limits and usage. |
| Currency | Money fields such as traffic value and cost come back in USD cents. |
| Plans without the API | A plan with no API access has the key rejected. Ahrefs lists the API under eligible paid plans on its pricing page. |
| Client plans | Claude: any plan, with one custom connector on Free. ChatGPT: OpenAI documents full custom MCP support on Business and Enterprise/Edu, and read/fetch only on Pro. |
From Ahrefs’ API introduction, limits consumption, free test queries and API key pages, checked Nov 8, 2026. Ryze AI does not publish which Ahrefs plan tier includes the API, and the unit allowance per plan is on the Ahrefs pricing page. Track usage in Ahrefs under Account settings, Limits and usage.
08 · Approvals and safety
How you keep control of edits
Approvals in Claude
Under Customize, Connectors, Ryze AI, Tool permissions, you can set each tool to ask first. The Ahrefs tool only reads, but a prompt that pulls many rows spends units, so you may want it on Needs approval.
Approvals in the Ryze AI app
The Tool approvals picker in the Ryze AI chat defaults to Skip all approvals. Choose a stricter option if you want to see each call before it spends units.
Nothing changes in Ahrefs
The only Ahrefs tool is sent as GET, so the connector does not edit projects, keyword lists or settings in your Ahrefs account.
Cap the key
Set a monthly unit limit on the key in Ahrefs. The agent can spend units quickly on wide reports, and the cap stops a runaway prompt.
Name the workspace
One Ahrefs key lives in one Ryze AI workspace. Agencies can keep one workspace per client and a separate key in each.
Policies
Read the MCP privacy policy, the MCP terms, the security policy and the permissions guide.
09 · Errors and fixes
Ahrefs MCP errors and fixes
| Message or symptom | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Ryze AI rejects the Ahrefs key | The Ahrefs plan has no API access, or the key was copied incompletely. | Check the plan includes API access and paste the full key again. |
| No way to create a key in Ahrefs | Only workspace owners and admins see the API keys page. | Ask an owner or admin to generate the key and share it with you. |
| Units run out quickly | Each call costs at least 50 units, and wide selects over many rows cost more. | Ask for fewer rows and fewer columns, and check usage under Account settings, Limits and usage. |
| Ahrefs tools are not in Claude or ChatGPT | Ahrefs was connected after the connector was added, and the client kept the old tool list. | Remove the Ryze AI connector, add it again and start a new chat. |
| The connection link is refused | The one-time link is not accepted while Ahrefs is already connected in that workspace. | Switch keys in the Ryze AI app: View on the card, disconnect, connect again. |
| Tools reply that a subscription is required | The workspace has no active Ryze AI plan or trial. | Start a plan or trial under Organization Settings, Billing, then retry. |
| 429 Too Many Requests | More than 60 requests in a minute, or Ahrefs throttling under load. | Wait a minute and ask for the report in fewer, larger requests. |
| The connection stopped working later | The key expired, was deleted, or its creator left the Ahrefs workspace. | Create a new key in Ahrefs and reconnect it in Ryze AI. |
| "invalid tool category" on the Ahrefs server | Seen with Ahrefs' own MCP URL: the tools query parameter holds a group name that does not exist. | Match the group name to Ahrefs' tool categories page, or drop the parameter. |
| A client lists too few Ahrefs tools | Seen with Ahrefs' own server: some clients cap how many tools a server may advertise. | Add tools=essentials to Ahrefs' URL, or pick the groups you need. |
The first eight rows are Ryze AI connections, with causes taken from the Ryze AI help center and Ahrefs’ API documentation. The last two are Ahrefs’ own server, from its tool categories page. More Ryze AI answers are in the integrations FAQ.
10 · FAQ
Ahrefs MCP server questions
What is the Ahrefs MCP server?
An MCP server lets AI clients such as Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor call Ahrefs through tools. Ahrefs runs its own hosted server at https://api.ahrefs.com/mcp/mcp for accounts on a Lite plan or higher. Ryze AI runs a hosted one with 1 read-only Ahrefs tool, ahrefs__read, on the same URL as its Search Console, GA4 and ad platform tools.
Does Ahrefs have an official MCP server?
Yes. Ahrefs documents a hosted MCP server at https://api.ahrefs.com/mcp/mcp that connects through OAuth in Claude's connector list, through Developer mode in ChatGPT web, or with a generated MCP key. It exposes 20 tool groups, from Site Explorer and Keywords Explorer to Rank Tracker, Site Audit and Brand Radar. Ahrefs says using the endpoint from custom scripts is unsupported.
What is the Ahrefs MCP server URL?
Ahrefs’ own server is https://api.ahrefs.com/mcp/mcp. The Ryze AI server is https://connector.get-ryze.ai/mcp, the same for every account, and your Ahrefs API key is entered once in the Ryze AI app rather than in the client.
How do I connect Ahrefs to Claude?
With Ryze AI, create an API key in Ahrefs under Account settings, API keys, paste it into the Ahrefs card on the Integrations page in Ryze AI, then in Claude open Customize, Connectors, Add custom connector, paste https://connector.get-ryze.ai/mcp, click Connect, allow the workspace and open a new chat. Ahrefs’ own connector is added from Customize, Connectors by searching for Ahrefs and clicking Connect. Every client is covered in the setup section.
Does the Ryze AI Ahrefs tool cost money?
Adding the Ryze AI connector costs nothing, but its tools need a Ryze AI plan or trial: SEO Starter $129/mo with a 3-day free trial, Paid Ads $89/mo with a 7-day free trial or Agency $279/mo, with 30% off the first year on annual billing. Every Ahrefs call also spends API units from your own Ahrefs plan, not Ryze AI credits. See the pricing page.
Can the AI change anything in my Ahrefs account?
No. The Ryze AI Ahrefs tool is read-only and sends GET requests, so it cannot edit projects, keyword lists or settings. Ahrefs' own server includes a management group that covers projects and keyword lists, so check what you approve there.
What Ahrefs plan do I need?
The Ryze AI Ahrefs connection needs an Ahrefs plan with API access; a plan without it is rejected when you paste the key. Ryze AI does not name a tier, and Ahrefs lists the API under eligible paid plans on its pricing page. Ahrefs' own MCP server is available from the Lite plan upward.
Who can create the Ahrefs API key?
Only Ahrefs workspace owners and admins can open Account settings, API keys and generate one. The Ryze AI help center says each key is valid for one year, while Ahrefs' documentation lets the admin choose an expiration date up to 10 years out, so read the date on your key. Ahrefs also deactivates a key if the user who created it is removed from the workspace.
How many Ahrefs API units does a call use?
Ahrefs charges at least 50 units for any billable request. Above that the cost is the per-row cost times the number of rows, where the per-row cost adds each unique field in the result, the filter and the sort. Most fields cost 1 unit and some cost 5 or 10. Cached responses are free, and the tool can read your limits and usage so you can see the balance.
What are the Ahrefs API rate limits?
Ahrefs limits the API to 60 requests per minute by default and answers 429 Too Many Requests above that. It may also throttle requests with a 429 when its systems are under load. A monthly unit allowance comes with the plan, and owners and admins can cap the units a single key may use.
Is the Ryze AI Ahrefs tool better than Ahrefs' own MCP server?
It depends on the job. Ahrefs' own server covers far more reports, including Rank Tracker, Site Audit and Brand Radar. Ryze AI is the best Ahrefs MCP route for joining Ahrefs link and keyword data with Search Console, GA4 and ad data in one chat, but its tool is read only and covers fewer reports.
Why are the Ahrefs tools missing in Claude or ChatGPT?
Claude keeps the tool list from the moment the connector was added. If Ahrefs was connected in Ryze AI afterwards, remove the Ryze AI connector, add it again and start a new chat. In ChatGPT, remove and reinstall the app, or have a workspace admin refresh it.
Can I use more than one Ahrefs account?
A Ryze AI workspace holds one Ahrefs connection. To switch keys, click View on the Ahrefs card, disconnect with the trash icon and connect again. Another workspace can hold a different Ahrefs key, and one Claude or ChatGPT connection can cover up to 20 workspaces.
