What are Claude skills for Google Analytics?

A Claude skill for Google Analytics is a saved SKILL.md file that tells Claude which GA4 report to pull and what to hand back. Per Anthropic's Agent Skills docs, the file starts with a name and a description, and Claude loads the rest only when a request matches the description.

The name allows up to 64 lowercase letters, numbers and hyphens and cannot contain the words claude or anthropic, so every skill here starts with ga4. The description, up to 1,024 characters, says what the skill does and when to use it.

  1. What it is

    One-off prompt
    A question in chat
    Skill
A saved file with a fixed report and output
    GA4 connection
Tools Claude uses to query GA4
  2. Setup

    One-off prompt
    None
    Skill
    Save once per Claude app
    GA4 connection
    One Google sign-in
  3. Same result each run

    One-off prompt
    No
    Skill
    Yes
    GA4 connection
Depends on the prompt or skill

Fields use their GA4 Data API names, which Claude passes straight into the request. Without a connection, attach an export with matching columns. For the ad account side, see Claude skills for Google Ads.

How to install the skills in Claude Code and claude.ai

Claude Code

Save each block as ~/.claude/skills/<skill-name>/SKILL.md for yourself, or .claude/skills/<skill-name>/SKILL.md in a project to share it with the team. Claude picks a skill when your request matches it, or you type /ga4-weekly-digest (Claude Code skills docs).

claude.ai

Zip each skill folder and upload it as a custom skill. Anthropic lists this on the Pro, Max, Ultra, Team and Enterprise plans with code execution on.

Connect the data

The Google Analytics MCP page lists the 9 GA4 tools on the Ryze AI connector, and how to connect Claude to Google Analytics covers each Claude app.

Skills uploaded to claude.ai do not reach the API, and skill folders saved in Claude Code do not upload to claude.ai. Claude Code signed in with your claude.ai account downloads your claude.ai skills (Claude Code skills docs). Anthropic advises using skills only from sources you trust. More free skills are in the Claude skills library.

Reporting skills: the weekly and channel view

These two answer the weekly questions and set the baseline for the diagnostic skills.

01. Weekly GA4 digest

Compares the last 7 complete days with the 7 before, by default channel group, and names the channel behind each change.

SKILL.md
--- name: ga4-weekly-digest description: Weekly GA4 recap by channel, last 7 days against the 7 days before. Use for weekly traffic, key event or revenue summaries. --- # GA4 weekly digest Report (runRawReport): - dateRanges: last 7 complete days (this_week), the 7 days before (last_week) - dimensions: sessionDefaultChannelGroup - metrics: sessions, engagedSessions, engagementRate, keyEvents, sessionKeyEventRate, totalRevenue Steps: 1. Compute the percent change per channel and metric. 2. Rank channels by the change in keyEvents. Skip channels under 50 sessions. Output: 5 short sentences, then a table with the change against last week. Use report numbers only.

Use it when: you send a Monday update or need one line per channel.

02. Channel quality comparison

Ranks sources by what visitors do after landing and flags sources with many sessions and a low key event rate.

SKILL.md
--- name: ga4-channel-quality description: Compares GA4 sources on engagement, key event rate and revenue per session. Use when asked which channels bring the best traffic. --- # GA4 channel quality Report (runRawReport), last 28 days: - dimensions: sessionDefaultChannelGroup, sessionSourceMedium - metrics: sessions, engagementRate, averageSessionDuration, keyEvents, sessionKeyEventRate, totalRevenue - limit 50, sorted by sessions Steps: 1. Compute revenue per session. 2. Flag sources above the median in sessions and below the site sessionKeyEventRate. Output: a table sorted by keyEvents, flagged rows first, one line per flag.

Use it when: you plan next month's channel mix.

Diagnostic skills: find what changed and where

Run these when a number moves. Each splits the change one dimension at a time, so the answer points to a channel, page or device.

03. Traffic drop diagnosis

Compares 14 days before and after a drop and checks whether page_view and session_start fell together, which points to a tag or consent change.

SKILL.md
--- name: ga4-traffic-drop description: Finds where a drop in GA4 sessions came from and checks for a tracking break. Use when traffic fell and the user asks why. --- # GA4 traffic drop diagnosis Ask for the start date of the drop. Compare the 14 days from it (after) with the 14 days before (before). Reports (runRawReport): 1. date, sessionDefaultChannelGroup: sessions 2. One each for sessionSource, landingPage, deviceCategory, country: sessions, keyEvents 3. date, sessionDefaultChannelGroup, eventName (page_view and session_start only): eventCount Steps: if page_view and session_start fall on the same day in every channel, report a likely tracking break first. Otherwise rank values by sessions lost. Output: the top 3 causes with the rows behind each.

Use it when: sessions or key events fell and someone asks why.

04. Landing page triage

Lists high-traffic pages with few key events. It reports (not set) separately, since Google shows that value for the landing page when a session has no page_view event (Google Analytics Help).

SKILL.md
--- name: ga4-landing-page-triage description: Ranks GA4 landing pages with traffic but few key events. Use when asked which pages to fix first. --- # GA4 landing page triage Report (runRawReport), last 28 days: - dimensions: landingPage - metrics: sessions, engagementRate, keyEvents, sessionKeyEventRate, totalRevenue - limit 200, sorted by sessions Steps: 1. Report the (not set) share separately and leave it out. 2. In the top 50 pages, flag pages under half the site sessionKeyEventRate or 20 points below the site engagementRate. Output: a fix-first table ordered by sessions, one sentence per page on what to check.

Use it when: you need a short, traffic-ordered list of pages to fix.

05. Mobile and desktop gap

Compares mobile and desktop key event rates on each landing page with enough traffic on both.

SKILL.md
--- name: ga4-device-gap description: Compares mobile and desktop key event rates per GA4 landing page. Use when mobile converts worse or after a redesign. --- # GA4 device gap Report (runRawReport), last 28 days: - dimensions: landingPage, deviceCategory - metrics: sessions, engagementRate, sessionKeyEventRate Steps: 1. Keep pages with 100+ mobile and 100+ desktop sessions. 2. Flag pages where the mobile sessionKeyEventRate is under half the desktop rate. Output: flagged pages by mobile sessions, with both rates.

Use it when: mobile converts worse, or right after a redesign.

Tracking skills: check the data before you trust it

The other skills depend on clean tags and key events. These three check them and change nothing.

06. Campaign tag audit

Finds sources written several ways, paid traffic without a campaign name, and campaigns in the wrong channel. GA4 assigns channels from source and medium, so one wrong medium can put a campaign in Referral (default channel groups).

SKILL.md
--- name: ga4-utm-audit description: Audits GA4 source, medium and campaign values for tagging mistakes. Use before a monthly report or when a campaign lands in the wrong channel. --- # GA4 campaign tag audit Report (runRawReport), last 90 days: - dimensions: sessionSourceMedium, sessionCampaignName, sessionDefaultChannelGroup - metrics: sessions, keyEvents Steps: 1. Group values that differ only by case or spelling (facebook, Facebook, fb). 2. List paid mediums with sessionCampaignName (not set). 3. List rows whose channel does not match the intended medium. Output: a fix table: current value, sessions, tag to use.

Use it when: before a monthly report.

07. Property audit

Reads the setup through the GA4 Admin API and compares it with what fires. Google's schema notes that key event status applies from the moment you mark an event, not to past data.

SKILL.md
--- name: ga4-property-audit description: Read-only check of GA4 property setup against what actually fires. Use when taking over a property or before trusting key event numbers. --- # GA4 property audit runAdminRead ({id} = numeric property ID), v1beta unless noted: - properties/{id}/keyEvents - properties/{id}/dataStreams - properties/{id}/customDimensions - properties/{id}/dataRetentionSettings - properties/{id}/googleAdsLinks - properties/{id}/attributionSettings (v1alpha) runRawReport, last 28 days: eventName, isKeyEvent; eventCount. Steps: list key events with no events, busy events that look like goals but are not key events, and the retention and attribution settings. Output: a checklist for GA4 Admin. Change nothing.

Use it when: you take over a property. For an event-by-event parameter check, add the GA4 event tracking auditor skill.

08. Realtime release check

Confirms page views and named key events still arrive after a change. Realtime reports cover the last 30 minutes on standard properties and up to 60 on Analytics 360 (Google).

SKILL.md
--- name: ga4-realtime-check description: Confirms in GA4 realtime that page views and key events still arrive after a release or tag change. Use right after a deploy. --- # GA4 realtime check runRealtimeReport (last 30 minutes): 1. dimensions: eventName, minutesAgo; metrics: eventCount, keyEvents 2. dimensions: unifiedScreenName; metrics: activeUsers Steps: confirm page_view arrives in recent minutes. For each key event the user names, flag it if its count is 0 while page_view arrives. Output: pass or fail per event, then the top 10 pages.

Use it when: right after a release, to catch a broken purchase or sign-up event the same hour.

Ecommerce and AI assistant traffic skills

09. Ecommerce funnel

Builds the funnel by channel and by product as two reports, because GA4 fails a report that mixes incompatible fields (checkCompatibility).

SKILL.md
--- name: ga4-ecommerce-funnel description: GA4 ecommerce funnel by channel and by product. Use when asked where shoppers drop off or which products underperform. --- # GA4 ecommerce funnel Two separate reports (runRawReport), last 28 days: A. sessionDefaultChannelGroup: sessions, addToCarts, checkouts, ecommercePurchases, purchaseRevenue B. itemName: itemsViewed, itemsAddedToCart, itemsPurchased, itemRevenue (limit 100) If GA4 rejects a report as incompatible, remove fields until it runs. Steps: 1. Per channel: cart, checkout and purchase rate at each step. 2. Per product: add-to-cart and purchase ratios. 3. Flag the weakest step per channel and 5 high-view products with low adds. Output: two tables and 3 sentences.

Use it when: you run a store and want to know which step or product loses shoppers.

10. AI assistant traffic

GA4's default channel groups include AI Assistant: Google sets the medium to ai-assistant when the referrer is on its list of AI assistants. The skill also matches sessionSource against a regex you control.

SKILL.md
--- name: ga4-ai-assistant-traffic description: Reports GA4 sessions from AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Claude. Use when asked how much traffic AI chat tools send. --- # GA4 AI assistant traffic Report (runRawReport), last 28 days (this_period) and the 28 before (prior_period): - dimensions: sessionDefaultChannelGroup, sessionSource, landingPage - metrics: sessions, engagementRate, keyEvents, totalRevenue - dimensionFilter orGroup: - sessionDefaultChannelGroup EXACT "AI Assistant" - sessionSource PARTIAL_REGEXP "chatgpt|perplexity|gemini|copilot|claude", caseSensitive false Output: sessions per source for both periods, the top 10 landing pages, and keyEvents per session against the site average. Note that AI answers without a click never reach GA4.

Use it when: you report on AI search. The full setup is in how to measure AI referral traffic in Google Analytics.

Quick GA4 prompts: no skill file needed

For a one-time question, a plain prompt is enough once Claude can reach GA4. Replace the words in brackets.

Prompt
In GA4 property [PROPERTY], which 5 landing pages lost the most sessions last week against the week before, and from which channel?
Prompt
List every key event in GA4 property [PROPERTY] with its count for the last 28 days. Flag any key event at 0.
Prompt
Compare Paid Search and Organic Search in GA4 property [PROPERTY] for the last 28 days: sessions, engagement rate and key event rate.
Prompt
Which AI assistants sent sessions to [SITE] in the last 28 days, and on which landing pages did those sessions start?

If an answer looks off, ask Claude to show the report request it sent.

How to run the skills on live GA4 data

A skill only describes the report; Claude needs a connection to run it. The Ryze AI connector gives Claude 9 read-only GA4 tools, listed on the Ryze AI developers page:

With Ryze AI you sign in with Google and need Viewer access to the property (Ryze AI help center) and no Google Cloud project (developers page). Every GA4 tool only reads, so Claude cannot edit key events, channel groups or tags. The same connector carries Google Ads, Meta Ads and Search Console tools, so a skill can put GA4 next to ad spend. Other GA4 servers are compared in best MCP for Google Analytics.

In the Ryze AI app, the same instructions can run as a scheduled task every day, week or month, with the recap sent to the people or Slack channels you pick. Runs use Ryze AI credits; plans are on the pricing page.

Troubleshooting: when a GA4 skill returns a wrong answer

Claude has no GA4 tools

Claude keeps the tool list from when you added the connector. Remove and re-add it, then start a new chat (Ryze AI connector FAQ).

No properties to pick

The Google login lacks access to the property.

Revenue shows 0

Ecommerce tracking is not set up or purchase events do not fire. Fix it in GA4.

The report fails

The fields are incompatible. Split the report or drop a dimension.

Numbers differ from Shopify

GA4 and Shopify attribute and define sessions and conversions differently. Use one source per decision.

The verdict

Turn each recurring GA4 question into a skill with a fixed report. Start with the weekly digest and landing page triage, run the tracking skills before you trust the numbers, and keep one-off questions as prompts.

Ryze AI runs these skills in Claude on live GA4 data. Its GA4 tools only read, so fixes to tags, key events or channel groups still happen in GA4 Admin.

Frequently asked questions

What are Claude skills for Google Analytics?
SKILL.md files that tell Claude which GA4 report to run, with exact dimensions, metrics and date ranges, and how to present the result. Claude loads one when a request matches its description, so each check runs the same way every time.
Do I need a GA4 connection to use these skills?
No. Each skill also works on an export you attach, if it has the columns the skill names. A connection removes the export step and adds realtime and Admin reads.
Which Claude plan do I need?
Anthropic lists custom skill uploads on claude.ai for Pro, Max, Ultra, Team and Enterprise with code execution on. In Claude Code, skills are folders on your computer. The Ryze AI help center says its connector works on every Claude plan.
Can Claude change my GA4 settings through these skills?
Not through Ryze AI. Its 9 GA4 tools are read-only and the Admin tool rejects create, update and delete requests. The property audit lists what to change, and you change it in GA4 Admin.
Show 7 more questions
What GA4 access do I need?
Viewer access on the property is enough, according to the Ryze AI help center. If no properties appear after you connect, the Google login you used has no access to them.
Why do the skills use keyEvents instead of conversions?
keyEvents and sessionKeyEventRate are the GA4 Data API metrics for key events. Google's Admin API marks the old conversionEvents methods as deprecated in favor of keyEvents.
How do I see ChatGPT and Perplexity traffic in GA4?
Filter to the AI Assistant default channel group, which Google assigns when the referrer is on its list of AI assistants, and add a sessionSource regex for engines it misses. Skill 10 does both.
What is the best Claude connector for Google Analytics?
For running these skills on live GA4 data, use Ryze AI: one connector URL gives Claude 9 GA4 tools. They only read data, so changes stay in GA4 Admin.
Can these skills run on a schedule?
Yes, in the Ryze AI app. A scheduled task runs the same instructions every day, week or month in a fresh chat and sends the recap to the people or Slack channels you pick. Runs use credits.
How far back does the realtime skill look?
Google's realtime reports cover the last 30 minutes on standard GA4 properties and up to 60 minutes on Analytics 360. For older data, use the traffic drop or weekly digest skills.
What does engagement rate mean in GA4?
Engaged sessions divided by sessions. Google counts a session as engaged when it lasts longer than 10 seconds, has a key event, or has 2 or more page or screen views.
