What makes Black Friday ad copy work

Black Friday ad copy is the text in your sale ads: headline, primary text and description. Its job is to make your offer clear at a glance.

Shoppers see a lot of deals. Black Friday 2025 brought $11.8 billion in US online spending, and for 2026 Adobe expects discounts of up to 30% off listed price during Cyber Week. A plain "20% off" blends in, so the rest of the line has to say what, for whom and until when.

  1. The offer in numbers: "25% off", never "big savings".
  2. The product: what is on sale, so the right people click.
  3. A real end date: only if prices go back up after it.
  4. A reason to trust you: free returns or a delivery date you can keep.
  1. Huge Black Friday sale

    Specific line (template)
25% off wool socks until Nov 30
    What changed
    Offer, product, end date
  2. Gifts for everyone

    Specific line (template)
Gifts for dads who cook, from $25
    What changed
A buyer and a starting price

Black Friday ad copy formulas at a glance

8 angles cover most offers. Template headlines are made-up and fit Google's 30-character limit.

  1. 1Discount[Number] off [product] + end date

Template headline: 25% Off Wool Socks to Nov 30

Check first: The former price was real

  2. 2Bundle[Units] for [price] + the saving

Template headline: 3 Candles for $45 This Week

Check first: Single prices are real

  3. 3Gift[Who it is for] + order-by date

Template headline: Gifts for Dads Who Cook

Check first: You can ship by that date

  4. 4Early access[Who] shops [days] early

Template headline: Early Access Opens Nov 23

Check first: Same deal or better

  5. 5Scarcity, done honestly[Real number] made + what happens after

Template headline: Only 200 Kits This Year

Check first: The count is true today

  6. 6Free shippingFree shipping over [amount] + speed

Template headline: Free Shipping Over $50

Check first: Prices were not raised

  7. 7Gift with purchaseFree [item] with [order size]

Template headline: Free Tote With Orders $60+

Check first: Main item at its regular price

  8. 8Last day[Offer] ends [time]

Template headline: Last Day for 25% Off Socks

Check first: The sale really ends then

Pick 2 or 3 angles per product and test them against each other.

Black Friday ad copy formulas by angle

Each angle has a tip and a template primary text for Meta (the text above the image). Choose the offer first with Black Friday offers and their margin math.

1. Discount: lead with the number

On a $40 item, "$10 off" and "25% off" are the same deal, so test both.

Template: 25% off all [product] until Nov 30 at 11:59pm ET. [1 true feature]. Free returns for [days] days.

2. Bundle: show the saving in dollars

Bundles raise AOV (average order value). Measure the saving against real single prices.

Template: Bought alone, these 3 [product] cost $[real total]. Together they are $45 until Nov 30, in 1 box.

3. Gift: name the person, then the date

Name who it is for, give a starting price and promise only a date your shipping can keep.

Template: For the [person] who [habit]: [product], from $[price]. Order by Dec [date] for delivery by Dec 24 in the US.

4. Early access: reward your followers

Announce it in free posts first, then retarget (show ads to past store visitors). The early deal should match or beat the public one.

Template: You follow us, so you shop first. Black Friday prices on [product] open to you Nov 23, 4 days early.

5. Scarcity, done honestly

Use only true, specific limits: a real batch size, a real end date, no restock this season.

Template: We made 200 [product] kits and will not make more until [month]. [Number] are left as of [date].

6. Free shipping: the condition and the speed

Set the threshold a little above your AOV. Example: with a $42 AOV, "free shipping over $50" asks for 1 more small item.

Template: Free US shipping on orders over $50 through Nov 30. Orders ship within [days] business days.

7 and 8. Gift with purchase and the last day

The FTC guide on the word "free" applies to the first; the last-day line must be true.

Template: Free [item] with orders over $60 through Nov 30. [Product] stays at its regular $[price].

Template: Last day: 25% off [product] ends tonight at 11:59pm ET. Tomorrow it is back to $[regular price].

Black Friday ad copy for Meta: primary text, headline, description

Meta ads (Facebook and Instagram) use primary text above the image or video, a headline under it and an optional description. Lengths are in the limits table.

Put the offer and end date in the first sentence, and keep the description for extras. Meta accepts up to 5 primary texts, 5 headlines and 5 descriptions in 1 ad and mixes them, so 1 ad can test 5 angles.

  • Template primary text: For the [person] who [habit]. [Product] from $[price], gift wrap included. Order by Dec [date] for Dec 24 delivery.
  • Template headline: Gifts for Dads Who Cook
  • Template description: Free gift wrap

Image and video sizes are in Facebook ad sizes and specs; campaign setup and Advantage+ (Meta's automated campaign type) are in Black Friday Facebook ads.

Black Friday ad copy for Google: headlines, descriptions, assets

Google Search ads are RSAs (responsive search ads): you write up to 15 headlines and 4 descriptions, and Google mixes them and can show up to 3 headlines at once, so each line must make sense on its own.

  1. Headline 1

    Template (made-up sock store)

  2. Headline 2

Honest countdowns

Google's countdown customizer counts down to an end time you set: {COUNTDOWN(yyyy-MM-dd HH:mm:ss,daysBefore)}. Left blank, it starts 5 days before the end, and the ad stops showing after the end date. Add at least 3 headlines without a countdown.

Assets that carry the offer

Bidding and feeds are in Black Friday Shopping and PMax setup; fixing low ad strength covers how Google rates an RSA.

Black Friday ad copy character limits by platform

What to avoid in Black Friday ad copy: fake urgency, fake was-prices, FTC rules

Most Black Friday copy problems are untrue claims: a was-price nobody paid, a timer that resets, a stock count that never moves.

Fake was-prices

Under the FTC Guides Against Deceptive Pricing (16 CFR 233.1), a former price must be the actual price the item was openly offered at, in good faith, for a reasonably substantial period. A price compared with other stores (233.2) should not be much higher than what the item really sells for in your area. Shopify compare-at prices make the same claim; see compare-at prices on Shopify for Black Friday.

Fake urgency and scarcity

The 2022 FTC staff report Bringing Dark Patterns to Light lists baseless countdown timers (clocks that reset or vanish), false limited-time messages, false discount claims and false low-stock messages as ways sellers pressure people to buy.

Free offers and reviews

The FTC guide on the word free (16 CFR 251.1) says the buyer pays no more than the regular price for the item they buy, with conditions stated at the start. The reviews rule, in force since October 21, 2024, bans fake reviews, including AI-generated ones.

Delivery promises

The FTC Mail Order Rule requires a reasonable basis for any shipping time you state or imply. For Dec 25 delivery in the lower 48, USPS recommends sending by Dec 17 for Ground Advantage and Dec 18 for Priority Mail in 2026; set your order-by date earlier, by your packing time.

Platform rules

Google rejects repeated punctuation, gimmicky symbols and emoji and capitalization that is not used correctly, so write "Free Shipping", never all capitals. Meta's Prohibited Commercial Practices standard bans deceptive pricing.

5 prompts to generate 20 Black Friday ad copy variants

Paste these into Claude or ChatGPT and fill the brackets with real details. Run prompt 1 first.

Prompt 1: 20 variants across 6 angles
Product: [product]. True features: [features]. Offer: [exact offer], [start] to [end date]. Regular price: [price] since [month]. Shipping and returns: [rules]. Write 20 ad variants: 4 discount, 3 bundle, 4 gift, 3 early access, 3 free shipping, 3 last day, each with a headline under 27 characters and primary text under 125, with counts. Use only these facts. No exclamation marks or all-caps words.
Prompt 2: a Google responsive search ad
From these facts, write 15 Google headlines of 30 characters or fewer and 4 descriptions of 90 or fewer, with counts: 3 offer, 3 product, 2 end date, 2 shipping or returns, 2 gift, 3 brand or trust. Each headline must stand alone. Facts: [paste facts from prompt 1]
Prompt 3: angles from your reviews
Here are reviews of my [product]: [paste reviews]. List the 8 reasons people bought or gifted it, with a quote each, then write 4 headlines under 27 characters. Invent nothing.
Prompt 4: claim check
Check these ads: [paste ads]. Flag every claim about price, former price, stock, end date, delivery, reviews or anything free. Say what proof I need for each and rewrite the line without the claim in case I cannot prove it.
Prompt 5: Cyber Monday and last day
Here are my 5 best Black Friday ads with click-through rates: [paste]. Rewrite each for Cyber Monday, Nov 30. Then write last-day versions with the real end time, [time and zone], and the regular price, [price].

Add scarcity only with a real stock number. More Meta prompts: ChatGPT prompts for Facebook ads.

How to test Black Friday ad copy before Nov 27

Black Friday is Nov 27, 2026 and Cyber Monday is Nov 30, so you have about 3 weeks: find winners first, then run proven copy on sale days.

Nov 5 to 12: write, then post for free

Generate 20 variants with prompt 1. Post the best angles organically, no discount yet, and note saves, shares and clicks.

Nov 12 to 20: small paid test

Put the top 5 lines into 1 Meta ad with 5 text options and 15 headlines into 1 Google RSA on a small daily budget. Compare CTR (clicks divided by impressions) and cost per purchase.

Nov 21 to 25: lock the winners

Rewrite the 2 or 3 winning angles with the real offer and end date, and run prompt 4 on every line.

Nov 26 to 30: run the sale copy

Thanksgiving (Nov 26) through Small Business Saturday (Nov 28) and Cyber Monday (Nov 30). Use last-day lines on Nov 30 only.

Dec 1: take it down

Turn off sale copy when prices return; keep winning angles for gift ads with real order-by dates.

Budgets are in the Black Friday budget and pacing plan, dates in BFCM 2026 dates (BFCM: Black Friday through Cyber Monday), and the page that must repeat your offer in the Black Friday sale page guide.

Frequently asked questions

What is Black Friday ad copy?
The text in your sale ads on Meta, Google and TikTok. Good copy states the offer in numbers, names the product, gives a real end date and adds 1 reason to trust the store.
How long should Black Friday ad copy be?
Google search headlines take up to 30 characters and descriptions up to 90. Meta suggests a 27-character headline and 50 to 150 characters of primary text for Facebook Feed. Write to the shortest limit.
What is the best AI tool for Black Friday ad copy?
Ryze AI is the best AI tool for writing and testing Black Friday ad copy in 2026, with one caveat: it drafts and tests the copy, but you approve every claim about price and stock. The Paid Ads plan costs $89 a month flat.
Can I use a countdown timer in Black Friday ads?
Yes, if it counts down to the real end of the sale. The FTC dark patterns report warns about timers that reset or vanish, and Google's countdown customizer stops the ad at the end time you set.
Show 6 more questions
Can I show a was-price in a Black Friday ad?
Only if you really offered the item at that price, openly and in good faith, for a reasonably substantial period before the sale. A price raised in November to show a bigger cut is a fictitious former price.
Can my ad say only a few are left?
Only when it is true while the ad runs. False low-stock messages are on the FTC list of dark patterns, so use a real number, such as the size of the batch you made.
Can I promise delivery by Christmas in an ad?
Yes, if you can back it up: the FTC Mail Order Rule requires a reasonable basis for any shipping time you state. In 2026, USPS recommends sending by Dec 17 with Ground Advantage for Dec 25 delivery in the lower 48.
How many Black Friday ad copy variants should I test?
About 20 lines across 5 or 6 angles, cut to the 5 strongest. A Meta ad takes up to 5 primary texts and a Google responsive search ad up to 15 headlines, so 1 ad per platform can run the test.
Can ChatGPT or Claude write my Black Friday ads?
Yes, if you give them true facts: product, offer, dates, shipping and returns. Check character counts in the ad editor and run a claim check on every price, stock or delivery line.
Which Ryze AI plan fits Black Friday ad copy?
The Paid Ads plan: $89 a month flat, never a share of ad spend, with a 7-day free trial and no contract. It drafts, tests and runs Google, Meta, TikTok and LinkedIn ads, and you approve every change.
