Open-Source Agentic Commerce Protocol
The Agentic Commerce Protocol after Instant Checkout proved its value by surviving independently. When OpenAI open-sourced ACP in September 2025, it became merchant infrastructure rather than a vendor lock-in. The protocol defines how AI agents request product data, submit orders, handle payment tokens, and coordinate fulfillment without requiring any specific AI platform or payment processor.
Post-Instant Checkout, merchant adoption accelerated because businesses could implement agentic commerce without depending on OpenAI's roadmap. The protocol's Delegated Payments specification lets merchants use their existing Stripe, Adyen, or PayPal setup, while Shared Payment Tokens provide security without exposing customer credentials to AI agents.
